We work out what the redness is before we treat it
Red marks on the face can be post-inflammatory erythema left by acne, rosacea, dilated surface vessels, or a skin barrier worn down by over-cleansing — and often more than one at the same time. Vbeam acts on dilated blood vessels. It does not act on brown pigmentation, and treating redness while acne is still active tends to work against you.
So the first visit is a diagnosis. If a topical, an oral medication or a different laser would serve you better, we will tell you that.

Settings are decided by looking at your skin, and recorded each time
Spot size, fluence and pulse duration are not fixed by protocol. They are chosen for your skin tone, your sensitivity and what is being treated — then recorded at every session and adjusted up or down at the next, based on how your skin responded. The same setting can be right one month and too much the next.
This matters in Singapore. Pulsed dye lasers were developed and studied largely in fairer skin, while most of our patients have skin that carries more melanin. Reading each patient's response and adjusting from there is how that gap is handled.

You decide how much downtime you are willing to trade
A stronger setting achieves more in a single session but produces bruising; a gentler one asks for more sessions and leaves you looking normal sooner. Neither is the right answer for everyone. We explain what each choice costs you before we start, and if a setting is more than you can comfortably tolerate, we adjust it during the session rather than
ask you to sit through it.
Vbeam Laser treatment before and after
Under Singapore's Healthcare Services (Advertisement) Regulations 2021, no licensed clinic may publish photographs of a patient before or after treatment. That is why you will not find a before-and-after gallery here or on any other clinic's site in Singapore. What we can do is tell you what to expect.
Vbeam is generally well tolerated and most patients have only minimal downtime. After a session you may notice temporary redness or mild swelling in the treated area, and slight bruising can occur depending on your skin's sensitivity and the area treated. Redness and any swelling usually settle within a few hours to two or three days. Where slight bruising occurs, it generally clears over about a week. Change is gradual: redness softens progressively across a course rather than after a single visit.

During the procedure, you may feel a light tingling or snapping sensation on the skin. The level of discomfort varies depending on the treatment area and individual sensitivity.
To support comfort, a topical numbing cream or built-in cooling system may be applied based on your doctor's recommendation.
▸ Can I have Vbeam if my skin is tanned, or if I have a darker skin tone?
Pulsed dye lasers were first studied in fairer skin, and you will find sources stating that Vbeam suits fair or untanned skin best. The reason is that melanin in the surrounding skin absorbs some of the laser's energy alongside the blood vessels it is aimed at, so in tanned or deeper skin tones there is a greater chance of a change in pigmentation if the settings are too high. Vbeam Perfecta allows pulse duration, fluence and spot size to be adjusted, and its cooling system protects the surface of the skin with every pulse, so settings are matched to your skin type and sensitivity rather than applied from a fixed protocol. Dr Silver Chua will assess your skin tone in person and recommend the settings appropriate for it. If you have been in the sun recently, mention it at your consultation.
▸ Vbeam or Q-switched laser — which do I need?
It depends on the colour of the marks. Vbeam is a vascular laser: it targets the dilated blood vessels behind red marks, flushing and rosacea-type redness. A Q-switched Nd:YAG laser targets brown pigmentation instead. Many people have both red and brown marks at the same time, and the two are often addressed in sequence rather than at once. Dr Silver Chua will identify which you have at your consultation and recommend the appropriate treatment.
▸ Can I have Vbeam while my acne is still active?
Red marks left behind by acne are usually treated once active breakouts are under control. If new spots are still forming, new marks may appear after treatment, so treating the redness first tends to work against you. Dr Silver Chua will assess whether your skin is settled enough to begin, and can advise on managing the active acne first if it is not.
▸ How soon after a session can I wear make-up?
This depends on the settings used. Where no bruising is intended, make-up can usually be worn very soon afterwards, and some patients apply it the same day to cover residual redness. Where higher, bruise-producing settings are used, it is better to give the skin a day or two first.
