Many people struggle with acne around the chin and mouth area for these exact reasons. For some, the breakouts keep appearing in the same spot, while others notice their acne worsens before their period. In many cases, it becomes an ongoing skin concern that lasts for years.
In this article, based on responses from 332 participants in our original acne survey, we’ll take an in-depth look at recurring chin acne — one of the most common concerns raised in the survey — and explore effective ways to manage it.
We’ll also discuss the underlying causes of chin acne, which may be difficult to resolve with skincare products alone, and share long-term acne care strategies that can help support healthier, more resilient skin.
[Based on a Survey of 332 People] 60% of Respondents Struggle with Chin Acne

In September 2022, we conducted a survey on social media asking people which area of acne concerned them the most. Surprisingly, 60% of respondents answered “chin” or “around the mouth”.
Perhaps due to prolonged mask-wearing, the survey once again highlighted how common chin and mouth-area acne has become.
More Than Half Have Been Struggling with It for Over 5 Years
In a follow-up survey conducted on the same social media platform, more than 50% of respondents who were concerned about chin acne said they had been struggling with it for over five years.
Compared to responses such as “about one month,” the number of people who answered “more than five years” was significantly higher.
This suggests that many people are not simply experiencing temporary breakouts, but recurring chin acne over a long period of time.
Could Diet Be One of the Main Causes of Recurring Chin Acne?
If acne keeps appearing in the same area for more than five years, the cause may not simply be temporary factors such as unsuitable skincare products.
Instead, long-term lifestyle habits and individual body constitution may be playing a role.
Among these habits, diet is one of the factors most likely to affect the body.
With this in mind, we also used our follow-up survey to investigate the dietary habits of people struggling with recurring chin acne.
The Real Causes of Recurring Chin Acne — and How to Manage It

Adult chin acne may be influenced by a combination of factors, including diet and hormones. In many cases, several causes may overlap in the same individual.
However, when we analysed the survey responses more closely, we found several common dietary patterns among respondents with recurring chin acne.
Many regularly consumed:
Sugary foods and sweets
“White carbohydrates” such as white rice and pasta
Dairy products
In addition, around 50–60% of respondents reported consuming sweets and refined carbohydrates almost daily.
Based on these findings, there appears to be a strong relationship between these foods and recurring acne.
These factors may not apply only to chin acne — they could also be common among people who experience recurring breakouts in general.
Let’s take a closer look at the underlying causes of acne and what effective long-term management may involve.
The Significant Impact of Dairy Products on Chin Acne

In our survey, more than 80% of respondents consumed dairy products at least three times a week, with many consuming them almost every day.
In fact, some studies suggest that dairy products may contribute to acne development. (※1)
The Complex Link Between Dairy, Hormones, Sebum Production, and Chin Acne
Foods such as yoghurt are often considered healthy, but dairy products may also stimulate androgen hormones.
Androgens are hormones that can increase sebum (oil) production in the skin.
In other words, excessive dairy intake may indirectly increase oil production through hormonal pathways.
If you struggle with recurring chin acne, it may be worth reviewing how much dairy you consume.
Try reducing dairy intake for a set period, such as one month, and observe whether your skin condition improves.
For some people, this change alone may make a noticeable difference.
The Real Reason Sugary Foods May Trigger Acne

In our survey, many respondents with chin acne also reported regularly consuming:
Sugary foods
Refined “white” carbohydrates
Sugar and acne are closely linked.
While carbohydrates are an essential energy source, some types can cause rapid spikes in blood sugar levels.
When blood sugar rises sharply, it may lead to increased sebum production. One of the key hormones involved in this process is insulin.
Refined white sugar in particular causes blood sugar to rise quickly, which triggers the release of insulin to lower it again.
However, insulin can also stimulate oil production in the skin.
Excess oil production may then increase the likelihood of acne breakouts.
This may explain why sugary snacks such as chocolate are often associated with acne flare-ups.
Can White Rice, Ramen, and Pasta Also Contribute to Chin Acne?
It’s not only sweets that can rapidly raise blood sugar levels.
Many common carbohydrates are also considered high-GI foods, meaning they can cause blood sugar to spike quickly.
Examples include:
White rice
Mochi
Udon
Pancakes
Ramen
Pasta
Bread
These foods are generally high in carbohydrates and have a high glycaemic index (GI).
Of course, carbohydrates are still essential nutrients, so the goal is not to eliminate them entirely.
So what can you do instead?

One simple way to reduce high-GI foods is to switch from refined white carbohydrates to less processed, lower-GI alternatives.
While both still contain carbohydrates, lower-GI options may help minimise sharp fluctuations in blood sugar levels.
White Carbohydrates | Lower-GI Alternatives |
Refined white sugar | Honey, maple syrup, beet sugar |
Udon | Soba |
Ramen / Pasta | Glass noodles |
Wheat-based pancakes or cookies | Oatmeal pancakes or oatmeal cookies |

With a few small changes, many high-GI foods can be replaced with lower-GI alternatives.
As a general rule, darker and less processed carbohydrates often have a lower GI compared to highly refined white foods.
If you struggle with persistent chin acne, paying closer attention to your daily food choices may help.
Lifestyle Habits That May Contribute to Recurring Chin Acne

Since many respondents reported struggling with chin acne for more than five years, we first looked at diet and eating habits as possible contributing factors.
However, adult acne may also be influenced by many other lifestyle-related factors.
While diet is important, it’s equally important to pay attention to the following habits as well.
Sleep
Sleep is not only a time for the brain and body to rest — it is also when growth hormones that support skin and hair repair are released.
When sleep is irregular or insufficient, the skin’s natural turnover cycle may not function properly, which can affect overall skin condition.
Lack of sleep may also disrupt hormone balance, which can contribute to acne and other skin concerns.
Interestingly, foods such as:
Bananas
Chicken
Lean red meat
Soy products
contain nutrients associated with increased levels of tryptophan, an amino acid involved in the production of serotonin.
Serotonin is sometimes referred to as the “happy hormone” and is also linked to hormones that regulate healthy sleep.
This is another reason why maintaining a balanced diet may help support better sleep and healthier skin overall.
Hormonal Balance
Hormonal fluctuations unique to women may also play a role in recurring acne.
If your acne tends to worsen before your period, hormones may be a contributing factor.
About one week before menstruation, progesterone levels naturally increase.
Among female hormones, progesterone is known to stimulate sebum production more actively.
During this period, it may be especially important to avoid additional triggers that can further increase oil production, such as:
Poor diet
Lack of sleep
Stress
Being more aware of your body’s natural cycle and maintaining healthy lifestyle habits may help minimise hormone-related breakouts.
Gut health is also believed to be closely linked to female hormone balance, so supporting a healthy gut through diet and lifestyle habits may be beneficial as well.
Stress
Hormonal balance is influenced not only by diet, but also by stress.
Long-term stress may affect hormone regulation and contribute to issues related to:
Sleep
Female hormone balance
Overall skin condition
Research has also shown that stress may negatively affect the gut microbiome.
Chronic stress may alter the balance of intestinal secretions, creating an environment where harmful bacteria become more dominant. (※2)
Because gut health is closely connected to skin health, stress may also have a significant impact on the skin.
Irritation and Dryness
In some cases, acne around the chin may actually be linked to dryness.
Interestingly, the chin area contains many sebaceous glands that produce oil, but relatively few sweat glands.
Because this area may not retain moisture as effectively, it can become dry more easily.
When the skin becomes dry, the body may compensate by producing excess sebum, which can then contribute to acne.
Overwashing may also worsen dryness.
When cleansing the face, avoid using hot water. Instead, use slightly cool lukewarm water — around 28°C — to help prevent excessive moisture loss.
This may be especially important for people who experience dryness or friction caused by masks.
We’ll explain mask-related skin concerns in more detail below.
What Is “Maskne”? Why Mask Humidity May Trigger Chin Acne

Since mask-wearing became part of daily life, many people have noticed:
“My chin acne became worse after I started wearing masks regularly.”
One possible reason for acne around the mask area is humidity and trapped moisture caused by mask-wearing.
Excess humidity may negatively affect the balance of microorganisms on the skin.
When the skin becomes humid for long periods, its pH may shift towards a more alkaline state.
Microorganisms associated with acne and skin problems, such as:
Cutibacterium acnes
Malassezia yeast
are believed to grow more easily in alkaline conditions.
In balanced amounts, acne bacteria can actually help maintain skin hydration.
However, excessive growth may contribute to breakouts.
Acne associated with prolonged mask-wearing has become so common in recent years that the term “maskne” has even appeared in medical literature. (※3)
Understanding the relationship between humidity and skin bacteria may help reduce mask-related chin acne.
Cause of Mask-Related Skin Problems ①Humidity
One of the most common causes of mask-related irritation is the humid environment inside the mask.
Masks are designed to reduce the spread of viruses and particles, which means they need a certain degree of coverage and limited airflow.
As a result, heat and humidity tend to build up easily inside the mask.
A warm, humid environment combined with sweat and excess oil may encourage bacterial growth, making skin problems more likely to occur.
Cause of Mask-Related Skin Problems ②Friction and Irritation
No matter how soft a mask material may feel, it is still a foreign object constantly rubbing against the skin.
Continuous friction throughout the day may irritate the skin more than expected.
This is especially important for people with:
Dry skin
Sensitive skin
A weakened skin barrier
Ongoing friction may eventually lead to redness, irritation, and inflammation.
Cause of Mask-Related Skin Problems ③Dryness
Some mask materials are highly absorbent, which may also contribute to skin dryness.
Moisture-wicking masks can feel comfortable when sweating, but they may also absorb too much of the skin’s natural oil.
As a result, some people may notice:
Roughness
Flaking
Increased dryness around the mask area
When the skin becomes excessively dry, the body may respond by producing more oil, which can contribute to acne.
Supporting Beneficial Skin Bacteria May Help Prevent Chin Acne

So far, we’ve discussed several important factors related to recurring chin acne, including:
Avoiding foods that may increase excess sebum production
Being mindful of humidity and irritation caused by masks
One reason these factors matter is because both excess oil and humidity can affect the balance of microorganisms on the skin.
In particular, excess sebum acts as a food source for microorganisms such as:
Cutibacterium acnes
Malassezia yeast
These microorganisms feed on sebum, so when oil production becomes excessive, the skin microbiome may become imbalanced, making acne more likely to occur.
Research also suggests that changes in skin pH caused by humidity and prolonged mask-wearing may encourage the growth of these microorganisms.
Beneficial Skin Bacteria May Help Suppress Harmful Bacteria
In addition to diet and lifestyle habits, another important factor to consider is the balance of bacteria on the skin.
One type of beneficial bacteria often referred to as “good skin bacteria” is Staphylococcus epidermidis.
Like acne bacteria, Staphylococcus epidermidis naturally exists on the skin and plays a role in maintaining:
Skin hydration
The skin barrier function
Not only that, but when beneficial bacteria are well-balanced, harmful microorganisms associated with skin problems may become less likely to overgrow.
In other words, maintaining a healthy balance of skin bacteria through daily skincare habits may help create skin that is less prone to acne and irritation.
Stop Letting Chin Acne Control Your Skin — Build Stronger Skin Through Microbiome Care

As we’ve discussed throughout this article, managing recurring chin acne involves not only reviewing your diet and lifestyle habits from within, but also supporting a healthy balance of microorganisms on the skin.
Internal care is important — especially reducing excessive intake of:
Sugar
Refined carbohydrates
Excess fats
Dairy products
However, external skincare is equally important.
If you want to support a healthy skin microbiome, choosing skincare products formulated with beneficial skin bacteria in mind may help.
It’s also important to avoid overwashing the skin with harsh cleansers.
Excessive use of strong cleansing agents, surfactants, and preservatives commonly found in skincare products may disrupt the balance of beneficial bacteria on the skin.
By continuing long-term care from within while supporting the skin microbiome externally, you can work towards calmer, healthier, and more resilient skin that is less prone to recurring breakouts.
